'Whilst governments flounder, now is the time for business to help lead us through our climate crisis'

In this blog post, our Co-Founder Tim Westwell comments on the necessity for businesses to lead the way, balancing profit and purpose for the global long-term good.
Last October scientists published what is arguably the most urgent and far-reaching rallying call yet for the world to cut greenhouse gas emissions and stop global warming. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report warned we are on track to reach 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052 if temperatures continue to increase at the current rate, and 3°C by the end of the century.
The world and humanity will be a very different place when we hit 2°C: there will be no ice on the Arctic, few remaining coral reefs and vast numbers of animals and plants will be become extinct. Rising sea levels will displace millions from their homes whilst crop yields will fall and fail.
It’s a bleak picture for our children.
But there is hope. And it’s coming from business.
Whilst Governments continue to deliver to the realm of short-term politics and are usually bound to their own geographies, businesses can lead the way, integrating profit and purpose together for the global long-term good. Whatever we may wish for, it’s a fact that consumerism continues to grow. But we as spenders have the opportunity to turn this wave from a negative to a positive.
Businesses, who are the largest contributors to carbon emissions, have a golden moment to join this transformation to become a powerful lobby for positive change. Not just within the parameters of traditional corporate social responsibility but to a whole-scale, systematic approach that embeds positive social and environmental impact into their own raison d'être.
Thankfully there’s a growing movement of companies called B Corps who are committed to changing how business operates, who believe business really can be a force for good.
Certified B Corps meet the highest standards of independent, verified social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.
There are nearly 3,000 B Corps across the globe (search the B Corp directory), a strong community working toward reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities and the creation of more high-quality jobs with dignity and purpose.
Pukka became a B Corp over three years ago. Our score (which you can see on the B Corp web site) acknowledges the pioneering ways we ensure we are making a genuine contribution to addressing global inequality, poverty and climate change – from donating over 1% of our turnover to environmental charities each year to validating our goal through the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to be zero carbon by 2030.
It would be amazing if every single company in the world became a purpose led B Corp. The more that we citizens can vote with our wallets or the way we run our businesses, the more opportunity we have to address climate change for the sake of humanity.
When we each make small changes in our daily lives, our efforts add up to a much larger cumulative action. By buying from, working for and doing business with B Corps, you vote for what you believe in. As Gandhi famously said: 'Be the change that you wish to see in the world.'
